The Answers You Need

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OSTEOPATHY, PHYSIOTHERAPY AND CHIROPRACTICS?

I get asked this frequently and my answer starts with 'not much!'
The main difference, however, is in how they are introduced to their particular specialism. Chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths spend between four and five years practising treatment methods and techniques, studying anatomy and medical subjects, working through conditions and then developing their clinical reasoning skills and management protocols under supervision.
Each profession works with the bones, muscles and joints of the body to ensure optimum structure and therefore function. They may have slightly different ways but neither one of the is the wrong way.
What matters most is that you find a practitioner that you get along with. The ability for someone to be able to communicate with you, make you feel at ease and leave you with a full understanding of what they feel the problem is, is much more important than the profession they have personally chosen.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN MY INITIAL CONSULTATION?

Your initial consult will consist of a chat about what is bothering you and your medical history. I will ask about any pain or discomfort, facts which affect that as well as any previous problems and other current medical issues.
I will then examine you to look for movement dysfunction and to investigate areas of pain. Examination may involve asking you to do a series if movements, as well as hands on palpation.
Finally, if appropriate, there will be treatment which may comprise of soft tissue massage, articulation of joints, manipulation of joints, deep tissue massage, acupuncture or taping  - each step of treatment will be explained beforehand and you do not have to do anything that you feel uncomfortable with.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Loose fitting clothing that allows you to move is a must. Depending on the area to be treated I may ask you to undress. Wearing shorts and a t-shirt or a strappy top is helpful! There will be time for you to change during your appointment.
Also if you do not wish to undress it is not a problem! I can work round clothes!
